Galerie Thomas Under Investigation for Fraud and Insolvency Delays
Consignors demand artwork returns as the gallery faces scrutiny.
The Munich public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into Galerie Thomas, the renowned blue-chip gallery, over allegations of delaying insolvency proceedings, fraud, and breach of trust. The gallery, a cornerstone of German art dealing since 1964, filed for bankruptcy in July 2024, raising serious concerns among consignors and creditors.
Consignors have reportedly demanded the return of unsold artworks and proceeds from previous sales. Owner Raimund Thomas and his daughter Silke Thomas, who co-direct the gallery, have not commented on the accusations. To complicate matters, Raimund’s whereabouts are currently unknown, fueling further speculation about the gallery's financial and operational state.
Galerie Thomas, known for its focus on German Expressionism, Bauhaus, European modernism, and contemporary art, has been a fixture at prestigious fairs like TEFAF and Art Basel. The allegations cast a shadow over its reputation, leaving consignors, collectors, and the art world questioning the gallery’s future.
The investigation underscores rising concerns about accountability in the high-stakes world of blue-chip art dealing.
