The Venice Biennale Announced the Curatorial Theme of Its 2024 Art Exhibition
President Roberto Cicutto of The Venice Biennale and the curator of the 60th International Art Exhibition, Adriano Pedrosa, have unveiled the theme for Biennale Arte 2024, titled “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere.” The theme draws inspiration from the series of works by the Claire Fontaine collective, which addresses foreignness and the fight against racism in Italy in the early 2000s.
Pedrosa’s appointment as curator brings a perspective from Latin America, marking the first time in the 128-year history of La Biennale that a curator from this region has been chosen. The exhibition aims to represent artists from around the world – Adriano Pedrosa explains his choice: “The Biennale Arte 2024 will focus on artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, émigrés, exiled, and refugees—especially those who have moved between the Global South and the Global North.”
The theme is expected to be reflected in the exhibitions of national participants. Cicutto expresses joy at the exhibition bringing to light previously overlooked artists and showcasing Pedrosa’s international perspective.
In addition to Biennale Arte 2024, a second Biennale College Arte event is organized, offering artists under the age of 30 worldwide the opportunity to develop and produce their works. National participation and collateral events complement the scope of the exhibition.
